Teens
FAAN has designed a variety of initiatives specifically for teens.
Studies have shown that adolescents are more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviors when it comes to their food allergies. To help educate teens about the consequences of their actions and teach them how to effectively manage their food allergy, FAAN has developed initiatives specifically for this age group.
Teens can find help and support from their peers by visiting FAAN’s teen website, Food Allergies in the Real World. Here they will find essays and advice columns penned by their peers. This content is reviewed and approved by a member of FAAN’s Medical Advisory Board.
A teen lunch session is also scheduled at FAAN's annual Food Allergy Conferences, where they can learn strategies on avoiding reactions, meet other teens, and ask questions about food allergies.
FAAN also hosts an annual meeting, the Teen Summit, which attracts teens with food allergies from across the nation. The Summit provides teens with the opportunity to learn about food allergy management from guest speakers, network with other teens, and perhaps make lifelong friends.
FAAN’s Teen Advisory Group (TAG) consists of teens and young adults with food allergies who provide input in our programs and author essays for our teen website.
For young adults heading off to college, FAAN's College Network offers a searchable database with information about various campus food allergy management policies. This website also provides contact information for college representatives and students that are available to help prospective students with food allergies make a decision about which college to attend.
